Soup Bread Bowls

Rather than going out for soup, why not make your own soup, and a bowl to put it in and eat along with it!

Ingredients:

4 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons kosher salt

2 teaspoons sugar

1-2 teaspoons black pepper

1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast

2 cups lukewarm water (80-100 F degrees)

Softened butter or oil for greasing

Directions: Yield 4 bread bowls

Part 1:

-In a large bowl, combine yeast, flour, salt, pepper, and sugar

-Add in water and mix until ingredients are well combined and a sticky dough is formed

-In the bowl, form the dough into a ball. Cover to bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1 1/2 hours (doubled in size)

Part 2:

-Find the mold you would like to use for your bread bowls. You will need 4 of your molds. Best options include deep oven safe bowls (typically ceramic) or round porcelain Ramekins

-Grease the dishes/bowls with a light coat of butter or oil and place the dishes on a baking sheet

-Using 2 spoons or forks, deflate your dough by pulling it away from the edges of the bowl, in towards the center

-Using your spoons or forks, separate the dough into 2 equal halves. Then separate those halves into 2 more halves, leaving you with 4 equal sized dough balls.

-Carefully lift each ball and place in a mold. Once in the mold, do not move the dough again.

-Once all 4 dough balls have been placed in their molds, cover with a tea towel and let rise in a warm place for 20-30 minutes. (doubled in size)

Part 3:

-Preheat the oven to 425 F degrees (begin this step while dough is rising in molds)

-Place baking pan with molds in the oven for 15 minutes

-Reduce heat to 375 F degrees and continue to bake for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown on top

-Carefully remove baking pan from oven and turn bread out of mold onto a cooling rack. Let bread cool for 45 minutes to 1 hour before shaping into bowls

-Using a serrated knife, carve a circle through the top of each bowl. While making the circle, cut deep into the bowl, without carving through the bottom

-Take the top off the bread and carve away extra dough from inside using a spoon. Leave a 1/2-3/4 inch thick wall to your bowls

-Fill bowls with hot soup

-Enjoy!
