Cuban Sandwich

Updated: Apr 9, 2018

Although you would believe a sandwich with a countries name included in it would come from that country, this time, you would be incorrect. The origin of the Cuban Sandwich (Cubano) comes from the United States. There is a belief that originally a similar version was created by tribes in Cuba. The Cuban sandwiches we eat today, came from the first Cuban immigrants who settled in Florida. The three main cities known for having the first Cuban sandwiches are Tampa, Miami, and Ybor City. Cuban Tobacco companies settling in Florida started off in the Key West and relocated to Ybor City. There is a blend of European and Cuban history melted into this sandwich, that makes it so great. One important part of the sandwich that makes it most authentic is the bread. Cuban bread is the best bread for it, but it is harder to find, so Italian and French bread are substituted. A main difference between Cuban bread and French or Italian bread, is lard. Cuban bread has lard in the dough, giving it more flavor. However, this makes the bread a less healthy option. Try out this meat and pickle sandwich for a delicious lunch or dinner!

Ingredients:

-1/2 loaf bread (Cuban, Italian, or French)

-1/2 lb ham -roasted and sliced

-1/2 lb pork-roasted and sliced

-1/4 lb Swiss cheese

-3-5 dill pickles (thinly sliced)

-Yellow mustard

-Butter (for melting)

Directions: Yield 2 sandwiches

-Cut bread in half horizontally, then in half vertically, making two sandwiches

-Evenly spread a thin layer of mustard on the inside of the bread

-In this order, layer roast ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, and pickles, on each sandwich

-Heat a skillet or frying pan over medium, and lightly coat it with butter

-Place one sandwich on the pan, then place another heavy pan on top of the sandwich, pressing it down to flatten it (1/2-2/3 the size it started)

-Let the sandwich cook, with the pan still on top of it, for about 2 minutes

-Flip sandwich and repeat cooking for 1-2 more minutes, until

cheese is melted and bread begins to crisp

-Repeat process with other sandwich

-Slice sandwiches in half diagonally or vertically, then serve

-Enjoy!

Note: This can be done with a panini press or grill if preferred!
